In response to one of the ISTD 2019 briefs, ‘Ulysses’, students were asked to recreate the last monologue of James Joyce’s book. I developed this book object to explore the human consciousness and how thoughts happen in our minds. This project became a valuable design challenge through which I was able to learn the craft of typography and the development of conceptual approaches informed by deep research in relevant areas.
To encourage the reader’s engagement with the piece, the book is shaped in 594x594 mm spreads. This square format allows the placement of typography in various reading directions to prompt the rotation of the object. Also, with the aim of prompting the reader to actively interact with the book, various typographic elements are embossed by hand, offering a three dimensional way to experience the concept of thoughts.
